Local Support Groups

The Center for Hope and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

These two organizations offer family support groups for parents with a child who has cancer and the child’s siblings. Attendees must call (203) 655-4693 beforehand to register.

Forum for Parents to Receive Education & Support

This group, intended for the parents of children with cancer, features guest speakers on issues like follow-up care, concerns about lasting effects of treatment, and diagnostic tests for hormonal studies or learning disabilities. It meets four times per year in room CH201 of the Yale — New Haven Children’s Hospital. Connie Nicolosi and Carolyn Demsky are the facilitators. When going through catastrophic experiences, Lotsa Helping Hands understands that a strong social network is critical to the wellbeing of every individual. Their website makes it easy to coordinate activities, manage volunteers, communicate and share information using announcements, message boards, and photos.

Support Group for Teens

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center offers a monthly support group for teens undergoing cancer treatment every first Thursday of the month from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Their meetings are held in the CCMC’s Hematology/Oncology clinic, located at 2J 282 Washington Street, Hartford, CT. The group facilitator is Christine Tatum, a Child Life Specialist. This organization offers free support groups for families of children with cancer throughout Connecticut. Contact them to learn more about the locations and times of these meetings.

Barbara Greenspan is a clinical psychologist with expertise in psycho-oncology. She works with individuals, couples, and families of all ages to help them learn skills to manage and live with a serious illness. The treatments focus on recovery and relapse, terminal phases of illness, the process of dying, death, and caregiver burden.
